OVM server farm sandbox - introduction

How often does one have the luxury of a full Oracle Virtual Machine server farm to be used as sandbox? Almost no-one has, as that server farm usually is intended to be used for production, thus high end and expensive.

So how to get the experience (except for on the job), or just the needed sandbox environment to try things out? Short answer: you can't. Or ... can you?

I am going to demonstrate it is possible to run a full server park on a laptop, which includes:
  • Multiple VM's running on at least two OVM Servers
  • OVM Management server
  • SAN server

The following blog posts describe the methodology to build your own OVM server farm sandbox for testing/educational purposes. I am proofing my case a Macbook Pro, 4-core i7 2.3GHz processor with 16GB ram, and 500G SSD harddisk.

We don't want to be intrusive to our host machine, we are going to do everything in virtual machines. We need:
  • VMWare Fusion 6, available through VMWare
  • Oracle VM Server 3.2.8 for x86_64 (64 bit), available through Oracle eDelivery Part no. V44746-01
  • Oracle VM Manager 3.2.8, available through Oracle eDelivery Part no. V44601-01
  • Oracle OVM Utils, available through Oracle Support patch 13602094
  • Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 5 for x86_64 (64 Bit), available through Oracle eDelivery, ARU 17052719, Part no. V41366-01
  • Oracle Linux 6 Update 5 template (OVF) - Paravirtualized x86_64 (64 bit), available through Oracle eDelivery Part no. V42906-01
